Gramitherm is an insulation material made from grass fibres, jute fibres and a binder.
Because it contains natural fibres, the material may have a characteristic natural odour. In most cases, this is temporary and gradually disappears as the building is ventilated and the construction continues to dry out.
If the odour is unusually strong, changes over time, or persists after sufficient ventilation, please contact our technical support team so we can investigate further.
Common Causes of Odour Issues
In renovation projects, odour issues are often not caused by the insulation itself, but by underlying building defects.
The most common causes include:
- Roof leaks or water ingress
- Air leakage through gaps and cracks
- Moisture trapped within the construction
- Condensation due to insufficient airtightness
- Poor ventilation during or after renovation works
When moisture enters a construction, natural building materials such as wood, dust, existing insulation, boards or other organic components can develop odours.
For this reason, Gramitherm always recommends checking the overall condition of the roof, airtightness layer and moisture management strategy before assuming the insulation is the source of the problem.
